There are several New York State Whip-poor-will
monitoring routes in need of volunteers for the 2009 monitoring
effort, which begins on May 30.
Conducting a Whip-poor-will survey
involves the following steps:
- Receiving a route assignment and survey instructions
from the project coordinator.
- Finding a partner to conduct the survey, which
requires two observers.
- Conducting the survey on a clear night with appropriate
moonlight conditions during the survey period, May
30 to June 15. This involves listening for Whip-poor-wills
for six minutes at each of ten points. These points are located
one mile apart from each other along a pre-defined route.
